Designing the Perfect Player Home - Blood Running Devlog 02

Homes in Video Games...
They're not just a place to sleep and keep your loot safe; they can also serve as a showcase for your creativity.
Today I want to show the process for creating the player's home in my game.
Day 1
The player's home base was the first mockup I ever made for Blood Running.
The base had a simple design inspired by Hyper Light Drifter. Detailed walls and flat-colored roofs defined the initial look.
Day 30
30 days into development, it was time to enhance the player's base. I created a mockup for the outpost, a safe haven for the player and a hub for NPCs and major characters.
This was the first mockup for the Outpost, I drew inspiration from Destiny 2's tower, aiming for expansiveness, intricate details, and lot’s of room for interesting characters.
Considering the apocalyptic setting for my game, I added plenty of organic plant life to contrast the wasteland topside.
Moving on to the player's home, I made the walls taller to allow for more decoration and added a console for building units and a vault for item storage.
Day 90
90 days into development I revamped the artwork for my entire game. For the Outpost I wanted it to feel larger and more enticing, I added a massive lake and waterfall as the centerpiece.
This central area would serve as the player's connection to the topside through an AI character named Acadia.
A banjo-playing NPC and a craftsman NPC, selling building units and cosmetics, were also added to bring life to the surroundings.
With the outpost in a good place, I turned my attention to remodeling the player's home. Taller walls, redesigned bookshelves, and new furniture types were added for a more personalized touch.
Conclusion
Customization is a crucial aspect of my game, whether it's in the base or the player's appearance. I want people to feel at home in the game.
This is only the beginning and it's likely the player home will see another major overhaul.
